Open Workshop Files, for Thursday, May 3rd
Here are the files for the Open Workshop on Thursday, May 3rd. Please download the PDF files and print them. You’re expected to have read the files, marked them with your pen, prepared some thoughts and comments, and be ready to talk about them in class on Thursday!
See you Thursday!
Open Workshop Files
Hi there! We’re having an Open Workshop on Thursday, so you should please download these files and read through them a couple of times. You’ll be giving the marked-up copies to the people who wrote the things, so please do write feedback and comments, mark it up, and most important, be prepared to talk about the writing here during class on Thursday.
If you’re still reading the stuff when class starts, or during class, your participation grade will reflect the fact you’re doing homework during class. In other words, it’s bad for you if you’re not prepared for class.
Here are the samples:
Open Workshop #1
For this first open workshop, we will look at something I have written. All students are expected to print a copy and bring it to class on Thursday, and to prepare some comments for the play. Think about spelling/grammar/vocabulary problems, suggestions for improvement, ideas about making the play more interesting, and so on.
Please be kind, it’s my first try at writing something this long in Korean.
Week 4, part 2
This is just an update for the end of week 4:
- I have received your pamphlets. They’re generally excellent. My girlfriend saw them and she thought they were real pamphlets until she read one and saw my picture in it.
- You have a new homework assignment: you are to write a short (roughly 2 pages, more or less) description of something abstract (for example, a feeling like hunger or love or fear) using similes (”The moon was like a blade in the sky”) and metaphors (”The moon was a blade in the sky”). You will complete this with a partner and submit it to me on April 10th at the beginning of class.
- Next week we’ll be starting the new section of our class, on Purpose (and Process).
- Keep blogging! The blog is looking great! And I’ll be changing the picture at the top of it, soon!
Weeks #3 & #4
Hi everyone!
Last week, I gave your group an assignment: to create the most effective travel brochure possible for any destination, real or imagined. You are to use description of telling details in combination with photographs in order to make the reader — me — want to go to the place that you’re advertising.
On Thursday, we discussed how to get photographs online, free and legally, and how to ensure that they’re of a quality high enough to use for printing. I announced that for this assignment, you are limited to Flickr.com and your own photographs for source material.
This week, on Tuesday we’ll look at the black & white draft copies you bring to class. You will share them with other groups in the class, who will give you feedback just as you will give others feedback. I will be keeping one draft from each group, which will count for part of your grade. (Homework!) You’ll discuss improvements that you want to make, and plan, and we might do a writing exercise in class.
On Thursday, you’ll hand in the assignment, and we’ll do another wrap-up assignment for this section of the course. I’ll also discuss your midterm project on Thursday, week 4.
Remember that as much as you must cooperate with other groups, you are also in competition with them to create the most impressive travel brochure. Handing it in late, or with excuses, is not impressive. The only thing that I’ll be looking at is your end product, so make sure it’s ready and the best you can do.
