Example survey sheet

Please download and look at my example survey sheet

for an example of a good way to set up your survey sheet. As you can see in the image below (excuse my cheesy computer drawing), there are spaces to record the answers you get from classmates:

This way you can record answers quickly without distracting the people you’re surveying.

Hope this helps!

Poll For Business Presentations, and Some Words About Your Interview

Here are the polls for you to vote on the Business Presentations we saw during week 12 (Nov 20th and 22nd). Please only vote one time in each poll. (That is, one vote for best, and one vote for second best.)

The winner and runner up will be calculated by giving two points for each first-choice vote, and one point for each second-choice vote. This means the poll result will not immediately decide the winner. I’ll post the math publicly so everyone can see the result.

Here’s the first poll:

Which Business Presentation/Product Was the Most Convincing?

And here’s the second:

Which Business Presentation/Product Was the Second-Most Convincing?

Finally, in class I promised a note about your interview. The most important thing in this interview is that you’re paying attention to the kinds of questions you ask. You have some freedom about how you can approach this. You could:

  1. Ask a question that you KNOW will be considered impolite or unusual, and see how the Anglophone you’re interviewing reacts.
  2. Ask questions you’re not sure about, and try to judge from the person’s reactions whether they find the question normal, unusual, or somewhere in between.
  3. Do your best to interview the person without any rude or annoying questions.

As I mentioned, one of the most important things is that you need to make the interview interesting! If it’s boring — say, consisting only of “Taxi Driver Questions,” the assignment will be considered incomplete!

You may record the interview if you like, and if the other person is willing. You may also take notes and write up the interview instead. Writing is optional, though, if you have recorded the interview. Please DO NOT email me gigantic MP3 files or video files. Please simply submit whatever media you have on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. I will set up an email account where you can send links to the files, if you prefer to host the file and let me download it instead.

Have a great weekend!

For anyone who needs another copy of the self-evaluation form, here it is: Conversation Midterm Self-Evaluation.

The self-evaluation should be handed in on Tuesday, October 30th.

If you would like me to erase the link to your MP3, please email me AFTER both partners have a copy of the file.

MP3s coming…

The MP3s, as you can see, are not yet up. I thought I’d manage to upload them, but didn’t get a chance. I will do so tomorrow, either after the exams or late at night. (I have evening plans, so it’s before 6pm, or after midnight.)

In any case, you should be able to download your MP3 by Friday. If you’d like me to delete the MP3 soon, let me know after you and your partner have a copy and I’ll do that for you.

Good luck on your other exams!

Website working…

I’ve heard from some students that this website was not loading over the weekend. I didn’t notice, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t working. Maybe something happened in Hong Kong? The last time I had problems, it was because an underwater cable line was cut in Hong Kong. (That’s where the server for this site is located.)

Anyway, the site seems to be up again now, and working fine. Cross your fingers!

Welcome to Intermediate Conversation 2

Welcome to the Fall semester 2007. I am teaching two sections of this Conversation course, one at night (pending sufficient enrollment) and one during the day. There are two separate pages for the two different classes, although sometimes posts will appear on both pages (like this one). Make sure you’re reading the right page so you don’t get the wrong information by mistake!
Right now there’s not much for me to say, except that you will be filling out this form and giving it to me. I’ll be giving you a copy in class, so don’t worry about printing it, but it’s always handy to have a spare.

Also, here’s a copy of the syllabus I wrote up for this class. It looks a lot nicer than the one the secretaries printed up, but I’m not going to waste paper giving you copies of this. You can print it yourself if you like, however.
