Week 12…

I have most of your collaborative essays on language comparisons in my bag, and need to read them this week. I hope our meetings last week were helpful to you in figuring out how to expand your essays in the coming weeks. If not, please come and see and and we can discuss this further.
We’re discussing citation this week, and so the following handouts will be used…

An excellent source for more on the MLA format, and examples of cases not covered in my handout, can be found here.

Confused? Read This!

Hi there!

Last week, class was a little rushed, so maybe I didn’t make some things clear. So I’m doing that now.

You’re probably wondering about your assignments and what’s happening next week.

Part 1: MEETINGS

Next week (Nov. 13 - 17) we’ll be meeting at my office, not at class. Students must sign up for a meeting. Students in my TTH class have already signed up, but students in the MW class need to go to my office and sign up on the door for a meeting. There is a paper on my office door. (My office is N223.)

Every student will have ten minutes to discuss his or her essay with me. I’ll explain my comments and my thoughts about how to expand your essay and get a better grade on the final version of this essay (which will be your final exam). Because ten minutes is a short amount of time, you ought to prepare for the meeting. You should:

Part 2: YOUR PARTNERED COMPARE & CONTRAST ESSAY (ENGLISH & YOUR MOTHER TONGUE)

Last week, you started writing an essay with your partner(s). You’re writing a short compare-and-contrast essay about Korean and English (or, for some of you, Chinese and English). I said to both classes that you need to give it to me on Monday, but that’s silly, since we’re meeting all week.

So I decided that the deadline for these essays, for both classes (MW and TTH), is Thursday at 5pm. Please DO NOT put the essay under my door. Instead, please put it in my mailbox in the English Language & Culture Department Office. You can feel free to submit the essay before that time, either to me or to my mailbox, but the absolute deadline is Thursday, November 14th 16th at 5pm.

Any questions?

Essays Due Week 9

To all Intermediate English Composition classes: your essays are due at the beginning of Week 9.

Your essays are due, specifically, at the beginning of class on:

MW: on October 30th.

TTH: on October 31st.

In lieu of classtime during the exam period, will be in my office, available for meetings during the classtime during week 8, for any students who want personal feedback or help on their essays.

Here is a copy of the essay format handout distributed in class. Bear in mind that in PDF format, margins and other formatting are slightly distorted. Follow the guidelines carefully, even when they differ slightly from the layout on the page.

This Week’s Homework

We discussed the underlying questions that clear topic sentences answer:

  1. What are you writing about?
  2. What do you want to say about that?

Homework for this week includes signing up for the classblog by Sept 21st, and posting your first post by the end of the week, which must be a self-introduction that is interesting and uses pertinent details for your audience… which is your classmates! In addition, students are expected to have chosen a form for their Form Mastery Project and to have written one attempt at the form by the end of the week.

Example links for the various forms I suggested for your Form Mastery Project will be added to the sidebar of this site in the next 24 hours, so please check back!

Student Info Sheet

Hi everyone. Some students still haven’t given me Student Information Sheets. I’ve run out, but some people still need the sheet. If you haven’t given me this sheet yet, please download it and print it out, and then fill it out and give it to me. Thanks!

Here we go!

Welcome to Intermediate English Composition, everybody. The semester has just begun and I’m still working on setting up our class blog. When it’s ready, I’ll let you know!

I’m teaching 2 Intermediate English Composition courses, but the two classes will have a lot of the same homework and assignments, so I’m going to use one page for the two classes.

When I need to, I’ll differentiate between classes in the following way:

The class that meets on Monday and Wednesday will be marked MW.

The class that meets on Tuesday and Thursday will be marked TTH.

Sometimes your assignments will be different, so you need to pay attention to this.

I’ve decided that both classes will blog together — because it’s easier to keep track of your posts, fairer for evaluation, and more interesting to be blogging with some people who aren’t in your class. I’ll announce when the blog is ready in class and show you how to sign in and post there.

Until then, here is a copy of our syllabus: Intermediate English Composition syllabus. Please make sure you have your textbook for the next class!
